Loop DR The Blue Forest and the Bakkeveen Dunes from America

From America to the southwest with a lot of rural and natural areas with many small villages and back in a cycling loop with junctions.

The route first passes the Zuursche Duinen, a unique shifting sand area with heath, fens, and forests. Then the route goes to the Blauwe Bos near Haule/Haulerwijk. The name of this forest is derived from the bluish spruces that occur mainly in the eastern part of the area. Although the trees themselves are not literally blue, the Douglas firs and Sitka spruces have a subtle blue sheen. 🌲💙

This forest provides shelter to various animals, including deer, raptors, and amphibians. The landscape is diverse, with heath, water, coniferous forests, deciduous forests, and grasslands. The Blauwe Bos was established between 1900 and 1920 to protect the agricultural lands in this reclaimed peat area from shifting sand. It is now one of the most beautiful nature areas in the southeast of Friesland.

The last major nature area on this route is the Bakkeveense Duinen. These dunes are a true paradise for walkers. Here you can enjoy vast heath fields, sand drifts, and forests. There are several marked walking paths that lead you through this beautiful landscape. Don't forget to bring your camera, as there are countless photogenic spots!
