Westerschelde and Zeeuws-Flemish Polder

Dreamlike cycling tour from the quiet border village of Koewacht, where we always find a safe parking spot at the square by the church. Through the wide flat landscape, along sparkling brooks and over car-free paths, we reach the beautiful Schelde promenade in Terneuzen. From here, the view over the vast Westerschelde with its large and smaller cargo ships is breathtaking. We cycle over several locks of the Gent-Terneuzen shipping canal, after which we still ride a few kilometers through the industrial area. But as soon as this is behind us, the real celebration begins: the glorious cycling along the dike path next to the wide Westerschelde. Here is a wonderful nature reserve on the sandy open areas with thousands of birds that breed in the mudflats and tidal areas. It is also a resting place for migratory birds. We are told that occasionally sea lions can be observed here.
We cycle mainly alongside the wide river up to just past Breskens, often with ocean giants next to us and with a panoramic view of the Walcheren peninsula and the city of Vlissingen on the other side. From the lighthouse we ride next to the North Sea all the way to Nieuwvliet-Bad. Through little car-free roads, amidst soothing natural landscapes with all their brooks and picturesque villages, we reach our endpoint, Koewacht, satisfied and fully fulfilled. This cycling tour has no specific signage.
