Description by the author

125,000 years ago, the river Maas flowed through the largest nature reserve in Brabant: the Maashorst. The area consists of dark patches of coniferous forest, colorful heaths, clearings, marshy pools and fens and towering trees. From the Slabroek Visitor Centre you can enjoy walking and cycling, and you might even spot one of the large grazers: the bison, tauros or Exmoor pony.

In the last century, the Maashorst was known for its cherry cultivation around Uden. At the end of the 1970s, however, these standard orchards disappeared. Now Maashorst farmers are growing low-stem trees for new high-yielding cherry varieties and the Uden sweet cherry is growing in abundance again in the Maashorst! Other special cherry varieties are the Hedelfinger cherry, the Inspecteur Löhnis, the Early Rivers cherry, the Mierlose Black cherry and the Varikse Zwarte cherry.

But there is more to taste in the Maashorst! Visit vineyard De Kreitsberg or Het Paddestoelhuis. Stop along the way for a special Maashorst Sausage Roll from Maashorstspelt and dine with a piece of meat from the Brandrode cattle. A Burgundian visit to the Maashorst is not complete without a nice beer. Go to the Specialty Beer Brewery in Oijen. Looking for something tasty to take home? At Groentenpluktuin De Meulenhof, you choose your own products, directly from the land. From the Slabroek Visitor Centre you can enjoy walking and cycling, and you might even spot one of the large grazers: the bison, tauros or Exmoor pony. Check out this map to see where you can spot them.
