This 31-kilometer long walk through the Gelderland Achterhoek is a fascinating journey through centuries of ecclesiastical architecture, noble history, and landscape metamorphosis. The route starts in Steenderen, where the neo-Romanesque Willibrordus Church and the Gothic St. Remigius Church from 1217 immediately set the tone: this is a walk where religious heritage and architecture are central.

Along the way, you will discover the surprising character of the Achterhoek. In Drempt, you can literally taste the modern pioneering spirit of Wine Farm 't Heekenbroek, where grapes grow on former noble estate land. The nature reserve Hekenbroek connects you with endangered species like the garlic toad, while Het Zwarte Schaar – a cut-off IJsselmeander from 1954 – bears witness to the drastic canalization of our rivers.

The route passes a total of six different churches dedicated to Willibrord, Peter and Paul, and Remigius, each with its own architectural peculiarities. Castle Ulenpas reminds us of the disaster year 1672, when Louis XIV established his headquarters here. In Bronkhorst, the Netherlands' smallest town with only 90 inhabitants, the circle of history and intimacy closes. Two characteristic mills – De Hoop in Rha and the Bronkhorster Mill – complete this rich cultural-historical tableau.
