Rucphense Heide hike across the heath
This hike is a round trip (across the heath back), returning via the Postbaan to the starting point
Nature area the Rucphense Heide.
In the past, large parts of the municipality of Rucphen were covered with layers of peat, which were boggy and inaccessible.
Crucial for the diking and the development of the area was peat extraction.
Later, in the Middle Ages, there was a great demand for the fuel peat.
This led to the establishment of a peat industry, and West Brabant was one of the first areas in Northwestern Europe where peat began to be extracted commercially.
After 1700, the peat industry gradually came to an end.
On the former peat extraction sites, production forests and estates were established.
