Peat areas between Etten-Leur and Schijf

This 33-kilometer long bike tour is dedicated to the peat extraction areas between Etten-Leur and Schijf.
The cycling route mainly leads through the forest areas between Etten-Leur and Schijf.

The starting point of this route is at the city office in Etten-Leur. The car can be parked near the shopping center.

After the Ice Age, the ice began to melt and formed puddles in the landscape.
Over the years, peat layers grew, which were later used as fuel in the Middle Ages.
Due to the high demand for raised bog, the peat industry emerged in the Netherlands.
To transport peat from the extraction areas to places such as Bergen op Zoom, Roosendaal, Oudenbosch, and Breda, peat canals were dug.
These peat canals and references to these former peat canals can still be found in the Brabant landscape.
