On foot from Antwerp to Veenendaal
Leg 10: Woudrichem - Asperen

There are several possibilities to cross the Waal, but before you do that, first visit Loevestein Castle of course! The ferryman takes his sloop over the Dammed Maas to the point 'Where Maas and Waal flow together' and then it is only 10 minutes to the castle. Inside you will experience the story of Hugo Grotius, who escaped from the castle in a bookcase. In the summer months you can take the foot ferry directly from Loevestein Castle to Fort Vuren on the other side. When this service is not in operation, take the ferry from Woudrichem to Gorinchem and walk from there via the alternative route over the Waaldijk to Fort Vuren. Always consult the timetables in advance: www.riveer.nl and www.voetveerwoudrichem.nl After catching your breath at Fort Vuren, it goes towards the Linge. Just before the crossing of the A15 motorway, a nice surprise awaits: the group shelters of the Dutch Water Line that are embedded in a completely new piece of nature. Along the Lingebos you will arrive a little later at Spijk on the river Linge. The Gilbert van Schoonbekepad will show this river to Tiel regularly and from different sides. In the town of Heukelum you can admire the brand new city wall and take a rest on the Lie Bank. After Heukelum Castle, the path continues along the Linge and you will see Leerdam, with the famous glass factories on the other side of the river. A beautiful grass path over the Lingedijk takes you to Asperen, where this part of the route ends at the large villa in which the municipality of Lingewaal is housed.

Fastest connection by public transport between start and end point: From bus stop Gemeentehuis with bus 260 to Leerdam Station (on Sunday Dial-a-bus!). From there by train to Gorinchem. On foot through the city to the jetty of Riveer and by ferry to Woudrichem.
