Hoge Veluwe Day 2

Day 2: Oisterbeek, 's Hertogenbosch, Zaltbommel, Buren, Wijk bij Duurstede

The first kilometers lead us through the forests and along the ponds around Oisterbeek. Now and then a decent stretch of unpaved path, but at the same time enjoy the long quiet alleys.
After a while, we pass the IJzeren Man, once a sand extraction area, now a large and heavily frequented recreation area.
A little further, we reach Camp Vught, a notorious concentration camp from World War II. In 2019, a thorough renovation was carried out, and the camp opens for us too late. So we continue to 's Hertogenbosch.
We ride along the canal in Den Bosch and first visit the modern Paleizenkwartier, modern architecture that beautifully contrasts with the old town.
We could visit the Noordbrabants Museum (Jeroen Bosch), but we move on to the proud Sint Jans Cathedral. It is definitely worth a visit. In the meantime, of course, it’s time for a coffee. After that, we continue through the center. After the city, we take a detour along the Haverleij, a modern residential project around a golf course. Strange, isn’t it?
Next, we cross the Maas and turn left. This brings us past the water castle Ammersoyen.
We continue along Zaltbommel on the Waal, where we naturally sing a little song at the foot of the Sint Maartenskerk...
Now we leave North Brabant and head to Gelderland. A little further, we visit Buren, with its Oranjemuseum and its Marechausseemuseum. Right across from the Oranjemuseum, there’s a terrace café that you should definitely not miss.
The last section takes us along Rijswijk to Wijk bij Duurstede, a fortress town with a rich history in the province of Utrecht.
We spend the night at the Hotel Brasserie Florian in the market square. And after dinner, we of course take a short walk through the cozy old town.
