A walk through the Vijlenerwald

Description

The Vijlenerwald is a vast forest area between the southern Limburg towns of Vaals and Epen. Here you can enjoy the tranquility, the beautiful panoramas, and the cultural history.

Castle Vaelsbroek
The route starts and ends at Castle Vaelsbroek, a pleasure palace whose origins date back to the fifteenth century. The current U-shaped neoclassical mansion dates from 1761. Don't forget your camera, as the building is worth a photo. On the estate, you will also find the Vaalsbroekermühle, a beautiful watermill from 1776, where grain was milled. The half-timbered houses and chapels along your route certainly contribute to the appeal of this walk.

Vijlenerwald
After a steep ascent, you reach the Vijlenerwald. It is wonderfully quiet here among the deciduous trees. At first, you walk along a relatively flat path. Occasionally you get glimpses of the Belgian valleys, further away in the hills around Vijlen. In the middle of the forest, you can take a break at the cozy Boscafé 't Hijgend Hert. The last part through the forest is a bit steep again. At the edge of the forest, a panorama of the area around Castle Vaelsbroek awaits you.
