The route starts at Veenendaal Centrum Station

This route really takes you 'over' the ridge. Once you leave the built-up area of Veenendaal, the ascent goes over the Prattenburg Estate and reaches the Elsterberg. The view from the Noorderlaan is beautiful and you almost imagine yourself in the Ardennes. Then follows a gradual descent to the village of Amerongen. The southern slopes of the ridge are known for their mild climate. Especially in the vicinity of Amerongen, tobacco culture flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. Marvel at the huge roofs of the old tobacco barns.

Just before Amerongen, the Utrechts Landschap has built a viewing platform on the edge of the Rhine outplains. You pass by it and can look beautifully over the Amerongse Bovenpolder. The old core of Amerongen is a picture with the long tower of the Andrieskerk and the Amerongen Castle. You can extend your walking route through the garden of the castle.

Time seems to have stood still in and around Het Berghuis. This tavern is located at the foot of the Amerongse Berg. Then you have to climb again with a beautiful view over the Betuwe as a reward. A striking point on the Amerongseberg is the Lonely Oak, for many hikers a resting point to take a breather. Then follows the descent in the direction of Veenendaal. Along the Hedgehog Lake you come to the Slaperdijk. You can read why this dike has that name in Stories along the route, about the sights along the way. Via the Veenendaal-West district you will return to the starting point of the route.
