Description by the author

Zundert is the birthplace of Vincent van Gogh. Here he was born on March 30, 1853.

Van Gogh, who later became world famous, was not the first child of Theodorus van Gogh (1822-1885) and Anna Cornelia Carbentus (1819-1907). Their first son (also called 'Vincent') had been stillborn exactly one year earlier, on the same date. A gripping story told in and around the Vincent van GoghHuis.

On the site of the Van GoghHuis stood the old presbytery of the Dutch Reformed Church. Vincent lived here until he was sixteen. Together with his parents and three sisters and two brothers: Anna (1855-1930), Theo (1857-1891), Elisabeth (1859-1936), Willemien (1862-1942) and Cor (1867-1900).

The family often walked in the vicinity of Zundert. These walks formed the basis of Vincent's love for nature and farm life. A fascination that was later expressed in his work.

This Van Gogh cycle route introduces you to the six Van Gogh Monuments in Zundert, the various places where Vincent walked, which he drew and described in his letters.

"Oh that Zundert, the thought of that is sometimes almost too strong."
Vincent van Gogh in a letter to his brother Theo, Isleworth, 3 October 1876
