The Upper Mustang only opened to foreigners in 1992 (annual quota of 1,000 people).
The Kingdom of Mustang had been a dependency of the Kingdom of Nepal since 1795, but was abolished by the republican government of Nepal on October 7, 2008 after Nepal became a federal democratic republic.
The Upper Mustang was only opened to non-Nepalese trekkers about fifteen years ago and even today the area is very limited. To enter the Upper Mustang, hikers need a special trekking permit and must be accompanied by a certified guide.
Hiking in Upper Mustang is something special . Here you will experience the way of life of true mountain people who have had little contact with the rest of Nepal for years and have managed to preserve their rich cultural heritage . In many ways , a trek in Upper Mustang is similar to a trek in Tibet, as it geographically belongs to the Tibetan Plateau.
