Wawel hill cathedral and castle

Wawel is a hill in Krakow, Poland. The hill has a height of 228 meters and is located on the banks of the Vistula River. Numerous historical buildings are situated on this hill. The most important are the cathedral and the royal palace. Beneath the hill lies the Dragon's Cave.

Royal residence
The royal castle, or rather, the Castle of Wawel (Zamek Królewski) on Wawel was the royal residence until the end of the 17th century. The building holds a special place in Polish history and culture.

The ground plan of the quadrangular castle dates back to the 14th century. The castle contains 71 rooms, which house the national art collection. Noteworthy is the large collection of 136 tapestries, including those by Michiel Coxcie, commissioned by Sigismund II of Poland. The father of Hendrick van Uylenburgh, who came from the Netherlands, emigrated to Poland in the 17th century and became a carpenter at the royal palace.
