The Free World Noble Evangelical Ladies' Foundation Joachimstein in Radmeritz was once considered the most beautiful castle in Upper Lusatia. It is located in close proximity to the border crossing Hagenwerder near Radomierzyce. It was built on an artificially created island at the mouth of the Witka into the Lusatian Neisse and is now situated in Polish territory.
In 1722, the unmarried chamberlain of Augustus the Strong, Joachim Sigismund von Ziegler and Klipphausen, established a foundation for the support of unmarried noble women from Upper Lusatia and neighboring areas, into which he transferred all his possessions. For the construction of the foundation castle, Ziegler initially requested designs from the upper land builders Johann Friedrich Karcher and Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. However, he eventually commissioned the former Saxon upper land builder Christoph Beyer to execute the construction work, without completely relinquishing the design work. Ultimately, many of the most important Saxon architects and artists of Electoral Saxony were active in Joachimstein, which thus became a significant building of Saxon Baroque. The ceremonial inauguration of the foundation took place after the completion of the work on November 14, 1728.
