Vila Viçosa is a small town of about 8,000 inhabitants in Alentejo. The town relies on the large marble quarries nearby. The town is only the size of a handkerchief, but it boasts an impressive number of sights. The most important is undoubtedly the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança. This is one of the most important noble families in Portugal, which also provided kings for a long time. Work on the palace began in 1501, but significant modifications took place in the 17th century. The palace houses a large collection of art pieces (paintings, furniture, sculptures...). In particular, the halls on the first floor are worth seeing, especially the Sala da Medusa, Sala de dos Duques (with paintings of the Dukes of Bragança), and the Sala de Hércules. Besides the living quarters, the kitchen, library, armory, and carriage house are definitely worth a visit. A walk also takes us past the Casa dos Arcos, the castle, and numerous churches, chapels, and monuments.
