Near the village of Alcalar, halfway between the beaches of Alvor and the Serra de Monchique, there was once a large prehistoric village of the 3rd millennium BC, remnants of which remain undone. This place was the hegemonic center of a territory inhabited by peasant communities dispersed in small villages on the banks of the Ria de Alvor, in the fertile lands of the interior Barrocal and southern hillsides of the Serra de Monchique.
