Although most cork oaks can be found in the Alentejo, the Algarve also has several places where the necessary oaks can be found. Here you walk on a lumberjack path at the foot of a hill on a lane with cork oaks of different ages on either side. The oaks are peeled once every 9 years, the number on the trunk indicates when it was last done. The peeling traditionally happens in June and July. Unfortunately it is also visible that many trees are dying or already dead, affected by a disease that is affecting all cork and holm oaks on the Iberian Peninsula.
