Small 16th-century chapel in which the interior walls contain the bones and skulls of monks.
The Chapel of Bones is one of the most famous monuments in the city of Évora in Portugal. It is a small inner chapel that adjoins the Church of San Francisco.
The Chapel of Bones was built in the 16th century by a Franciscan monk who, in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation in the region, wanted to bring his brothers to contemplation and convey a message about the fleeting and transitory nature of life. This is clearly reflected in the inscription that can be read at the mention:
