The church was built in 1640 on the site of a former chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Desterro . The church was founded by Friar Luís Álvaro de Távora.
The main facade is made of granite, with emphasis on the portico, framed by Corinthian columns and topped with a broken arched pediment on which stands the shield of the founder. It is surmounted by a spire in which there is a niche with the statue of the Virgin . The bell tower leans against the right side.
What is really surprising is the interior , since all the walls are completely covered with gilded wood carvings , sculptures by Manuel Martins, Manuel Gouveia and Manuel Machado, from the 18th century. It is considered a treasure of Portugal. Also noteworthy is the tabernacle of the main altar , carved in wood. In this church, five Italian tapestries were found that are currently in the Municipal Museum.
The paintings in the chapel show the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi, the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Presence in the Temple.
