In front of the Shrine of Our Lady of Remedies are the spectacular steps that connect the square, in the city centre, with the Shrine, on the top of Monte São Estevão.
The picturesque staircase has 686 steps and is 500 meters long , divided into 9 flights, with flat parts. The entire route is decorated with chapels, fountains, statues and obelisks, with a wealth of details.
Construction took 150 years and ended in 1905
The staircase is surrounded by the Santo Estevão or Remédios Park , where the cult of the saint is declining at the expense of the devotion to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. The park, crossed by several paths and with several corners with picnic tables , has a great variety of tree species
