This bust in honor of João Ferreira Franco Castelo Branco, better known as João Franco , was made in 1934.
The bust, by sculptor Teixeira Lopes , was part of a complex designed by architect Marques da Silva.
João Franco was born on 14 February 1855 and died in April 1929. He studied law at the University of Coimbra and was one of the most important politicians in the last phase of the Portuguese constitutional monarchy. In 1884 João Franco was elected to the Portuguese judiciary as a Member of Parliament for Guimarães . After his election there was a great conflict between Braga and Guimarães , which attracted the attention of the whole country and with the greatest energy he defended the cause of the city that had voted for him, which earned him expressions of sympathy from his voters.
