Next to the Tower of St. John , approximately where the St. John's Square and the fountain are now, there was a small chapel where St. John was venerated. One day, the small chapel was badly damaged by fire and only a few statues were saved. With the demolition of the St. John's Tower, the fate of the chapel was also sealed and it too was dismantled.
The construction of the chapel of S. João began on April 9, 1863, in the place where it now stands. The building was completed in 1867 and consecrated on June 16 of the same year. It has only one altar, but the richness of the carvings deserves to be highlighted and appreciated. The chapel has an octagonal shape. The materials used for all the masonry came from the original tower and chapel of the same saint and from the adjacent small section of wall that then stood at the mouth of the Rua de S. João.
