This church, in full the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia das Pereiras, was originally built in 1525 by Pedro Afonso Fiúza and his wife Catarina Madriz to replace a small chapel that had stood on this site.
The architectural features we see today are the result of a major remodelling in 1818. The Pereiras Chapel was donated to the City Council by its owners in 1979 and the last works were carried out in 1998 , when a new choir and facilities to support cultural activities were built, while the bell tower was left unfinished, as has always been the case throughout the building's history.
Inside, part of the 19th-century altarpiece stands out, a remnant of the decay to which the chapel was exposed for years.
