The Basilica of the Congregados, or Church of the Congregados, is part of the former Convent of the Congregados.
The basilica was designed by the architect André Soares and built in the 18th century, but was not completed until the 20th century. Construction began in 1703 and was consecrated on 27 October 1717. However, the towers still had to be built and the statues had to be placed in the niches on the façade. The western tower was not completed until 1964.
On July 14, 1944, a small plane hit the east tower (the only one left at that time) with a wing and then crashed.
