Casa de Submosteiro, also known as Solar dos Vasconcelos , was built in the second half of the 18th century and the family remained the owners until the 1970s.
The construction of this building was the result of the transformation of a terraced house and adjoining barn, built in 1689 by Jacinto Vieira de Barros de Vasconcelos. The building was intended as a sign of power, which the nobility of its owners imposed on the city, and was part of a group of properties that appeared in Vila do Conde around the same time.
The coat of arms was created shortly after this transformation, in the 1770s, by Mónica Escolástica de Vasconcelos Monteiro de Barros e Almada and her husband, Paulo José de Lima. Their son Francisco de Vasconcelos Monteiro de Lima Barros e Faria was granted a coat of arms by King Maria I in 1779, which is represented in the coat of arms stone above the central entrance . The quartered coat of arms contains the arms of the Lima, Vasconcelos, Monteiro and Barros families.
In 1980, the building was renovated , leaving only the façade. With the intervention of the municipality, which later acquired the dilapidated mansion, it was transformed into the Municipal Auditorium , a space dedicated to culture, where, among other things, theatre, dance, film, concerts and exhibitions are held.
