Capela da Coroação de Espinhos (Chapel of the Coronation of Thorns) - Bom Jesus - braga

The Capela da Coroação de Espinhos is the sixth chapel that is part of the Via Sacra of Bom Jesus do Monte.

It depicts a painful and humiliating moment in the Passion of Jesus: the crown of thorns being pressed onto his head by the Roman soldiers.

After the scourging, the Roman soldiers mocked and belittled Jesus. They placed a crown of thorns on his head and a reed as a scepter, mockingly shouting, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

This scene shows how Jesus was physically and psychologically humiliated , while being presented as a fake king.

You see Jesus sitting on a stone or throne , with a crown of thorns on his head, Roman soldiers mocking him, bowing or beating him. Jesus has a reed (symbolic scepter) in his hands. An atmosphere of humiliation and mockery , visible in the facial expressions of the figures.
