The Capela da Subida para o Calvário is the seventh chapel in the Via Sacra of Bom Jesus do Monte.
It depicts the difficult moment when Jesus carries his cross and climbs the hill of Golgotha (Calvário) , where he will eventually be crucified.
After Jesus had been scourged and mocked , he was forced to carry his own cross to Golgotha. He fell several times along the way and was helped by Simon of Cyrene , who was forced to carry the cross.
In the chapel you see Jesus carrying the cross , visibly exhausted and stumbling. Simon of Cyrene is forced by soldiers to help carry the cross. Roman soldiers push Jesus continues and sometimes hits. Bystanders, such as Mary and John , watch helplessly. An atmosphere of pain and suffering , reinforced by the body language and facial expressions.
This scene shows the utmost physical suffering of Jesus , but also a moment of human help in the figure of Simon.
