The Capela das Quedas (Chapel of the Falls) is the ninth chapel in the Via Sacra of Bom Jesus.
It depicts the moments when Jesus falls while carrying his cross on the way to Golgotha. According to tradition, Jesus fell three times under the weight of the cross, due to the exhaustion of his scourging and the heavy burden. Although the Bible does not explicitly mention this, the moment is seen symbolically as Jesus' struggle with suffering and sacrifice .
In the chapel you see Jesus on the ground , under the weight of the cross, visibly exhausted. Roman soldiers urge him to get up. Simon of Cyrene is forced to help carry the cross. Mary and other bystanders look on with pity. An atmosphere of pain, but also determination , because Jesus gets up again despite everything.
