Fountain of Saint Mateus - Bom Jesus - Braga

At the top of the avenue and the hill is the park with the Three Chapels and Evangelists, which was built in the period 1747-1769.

It has a rocaille architecture with three hexagonal chapels in a hexagonal shape. At the end of the chapels are placed the sculptures of the four evangelists . On the fountains are inscriptions referring to their writings, designed by André Soares.

Just to our left we found the statue and fountain of Saint Matthew, the first evangelist. In your left hand you hold a book, which is certainly related to the gospel you wrote. Next to you is an angel.

Just below the statue is the Latin inscription: <LIBER GENERATIONIS JESU CHRISTI FILII DAVID, FILII ABRAHAM», translated as: «Book of the origins of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham». At the fountain an angel, symbol of that evangelist, poured water from his mouth. Angels are the mediators between God and the world , the messengers of the word of the Lord, just like the apostles who wrote the story of Christ as Man.
