Miradouro de São Cristóvão do Douro

The Miradouro de São Cristóvão do Douro , also known as Miradouro Torguiano , is one of the most scenic viewpoints in the Douro Valley

From this viewpoint you have a breathtaking panoramic view of the vineyard-covered hills, the winding Douro River and the surrounding traditional wine farms. You have a view of a tributary that flows into the Douro.

Miguel Torga , one of the most important Portuguese writers of the 20th century, was born here in the area. There is a commemorative plaque. His work breathes the rugged landscape, the peasant life and the character of Northern Portugal. His famous statement about this region: " O Douro é excessivo. É tudo ao mesmo tempo . A paisagem, o vinho, os homens, o trabalho. " (“ The Douro is excessive. Everything is at once : the landscape, the wine, the people, the work.”)
