Gardens of Solar de Mateus

The castle is preceded by a large water feature in which the front facade is reflected , creating a surprise effect.

The gardens of the Casa de Mateus are one of the finest examples of formal garden art in Portugal and form an essential part of the overall Baroque concept of the palace.

The gardens were originally laid out in the 18th century and have an inverted L-shape, laid out in terraces or parterres with a gentle slope, most with box beds in geometric shapes, in a formal style, with French influences. Dense hedges and foliage corridors create surprise corners and intimate garden rooms.

Open-air concerts and cultural events are often held in the gardens.

In addition to the garden, there are also agricultural lands planted with vineyards, orchards and vegetable gardens.
