Igreja da Misericordia de Vila Real

The church was built in the middle of the 16th century.

Although the church was built in the 16th century, its robust exterior shows classical lines reminiscent of a Roman temple. The interior consists of a single plastered room, decorated with azulejos from that period.

Noteworthy is the presence of the tomb of José Custódio , known as the "Holy Soldier" , who was executed in 1818 after a miscarriage of justice. His innocence was later recognized, and he became a figure of veneration in the city.
