Remains Laholm Castle

Source: Wamba

In 1630, when Halland was still a part of Danmark, de Danish king Christian IV had upgraded the Laholm castle from the 13th century into a strong pentagonic fortress. Nevertheless the castle, situated on a small island in a creek at the north side of the river Lagan, was taken by the Swedish in 1644. Queen Christina stayed here a night during her travel to the south in 1654. Here she changed her outfit. She cut her hair and took man's clothes in order to travel incognito with a small company through Danmark. The famous story that she jumped here over the river - the border between Sweden and Danmark - shouting out 'At last I'm free' is for shure fake: the Lagan wasn't the border at all. In 1675 the Swedish king Charles XI gave the order to demolish the castle, because it didn't have a military function anymore. The foundation can still be viewed. In the beginning of the 20th century an impressive hydroelectric power station was built near the spot.
