Monte Carlo is a mountain in the Republic of San Marino located in the castello of Fiorentino. With its 559 meters above sea level, it is the second highest peak in the small state after Mount Titano.
On April 16, 1913, the Trieste aviator Gianni Widmer made the first flight over the skies of San Marino. With his Blériot XI of 50 horsepower, he took off from the Sartòna plain in Rimini, and despite facing headwinds, he reached 1,600 meters before landing after eleven minutes of flight over the hill of Monte Carlo in the territory of Fiorentino. A pillar commemorates Widmer's achievement, awarded the gold medal of the first class for civil merit by the Republic of San Marino. The monument was created by the sculptor Carlo Reffi, while the inscription was written by Pietro Franciosi. It was temporarily the second monument dedicated in the world to an aviator, the first being erected in Paris in 1913 in honor of Alberto Santos Dumont.
