Chakangrao (ancient Kamphaeng Phet) had the same town planning concept as Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, with separate zones for religious sites, both within and outside the town limits. Chakangrao was situated in a strategic location near the Ping River. The city was an outpost and was fortified with a high defence wall and fortresses, all constructed of laterite. The rectangular town measured 300 to 700 meters wide and 2,200 metres long.
A zone within the town wall covering an area of 503 rais includes Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Phra That, the Ancient Palace (Sa Mon), Siva Shrine, town wall, moat and fortifications.
