Laterite was a construction material mainly used to build the monasteries of Si Satchanalai. Laterite is a weathering product rich in iron and aluminum which is formed, as its constituent minerals rapidly dissolve as a result of intense weathering action in hot humid tropical regions. Laterite was widely used for various purposes, ranging from foundation rocks and platforms to moats and fences. Laterite blocks were cut out of the soil and exposed in the sun for drying. The exposure to the air increased its hardness and made it an excellent building material.
