Wat Pho Chai contains a large golden Buddha called Luang Pho Phra Sai. The flame-shaped head ornament is laid in with rubies. The story goes that the Lao King Setthathirat (1534–1572) had three similar statues made in honor of his daughters. The images were called Phra Soem, Phra Suk and Phra Sai. The statues remained at Vientiane, the old capital of the Kingdom of Lan Chang. In 1827 the Lao under King King Anouvong (Chaiya Sethathirath V) in an attempt to recreate the former Kingdom, attacked Siam and marched down towards Bangkok. The Siamese counterattacked around Saraburi, what led later to the capture and destruction of the capital Vientiane. The three Buddha images, next to many other Buddha images, were taken by the Siamese in 1828. King Rama III instructed to send them to Bangkok.
