Mueang Sema - Monument No 1

Source: Ayutthaya Historical Research

Description

Monument No.1 was a Khmer sanctuary built in the 11th-12th centuries A.D. The sanctuary was made of sandstones and bricks and faces south. It has a rectangular plan and is measured 50 metres long and 45 metres wide, surrounded by a rectangular boundary wall. Because the sanctuary collapsed a long time ago, the remaining building is now only 1 metre high. Other buildings in the vicinity of this monument are as follows.
1. The main shrine (Prasat): This shrine faces south and is situated on a rectangular base that measured 8 metres wide and 22 metres long. It has a Mondop (a projecting structure aka Mandapa) in the front of a tower. The main shrine comprises the tower, and the Mondop has three staircases. The front staircase at the Mondop is connected to a brick walkway that leads to the main porch (Gopura) at the south boundary wall of the sanctuary.
2. The two buildings: One is located in the east and the other is located in the west of the main shrine. Both are the same size, measuring 6 metres wide and 12.30 metres long. They were made of bricks for the top and sandstones for the base. Each one faces the south.
3. The small building: This building is situated in the area to the southeast of the main shrine. This building measured 3.80 metres wide and 5 metres long.
