The ancient city of In Buri or Ban Khu Mueang Ancient City is located in the village of Khu Mueang, in the sub-district of Huai Chan. It was possibly an early step in the expansion of Dvaravati northwards from U Thong, seen from its situation near the Chao Phraya River in Sing Buri Province. The ancient city plan was rectangular with curved corners, 650 m wide, 750 m long. There are a large mound and surrounding moat with earth banks. There are said to be three large reservoirs, one of which, about 75 meters in diameter. A considerable amount of excavation has been undertaken there by the Fine Arts Department. At the habitation site, excavations had brought to light potsherds down to a depth of 7 feet. Many pieces of pottery were excavated here, such as crockery, pot, jar, kettle, etc. Others also found include coloured beads, earthenware lamps, a greenish stone wheel of the law, earrings, and silver coins inscribed with the word “Sri Dvaravati Svara Punya.”
In the In Buri museum at Wat Bot are a mixed assemblage of stucco fragments and other objects from Khu Mueang, probably covering a very considerable period, but unfortunately deprived of archeological context. Tablet fragments have been found here coming from the same mould as those found in U-Thong. Another connection with U Thong was the discovery of terracotta figures. Inside the present area of Mueang Boran Ban Khu Mueang lies an arboretum which covers an area of around 500 rai. It is shady and beautiful with various species of plants. [Mixed sources]
