Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang is an ancient temple linked with two other adjacent temples, Wat Phra Yuen Phutthabat Yukhon and Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, to commemorate the legend of a visit to the area by Gautama, the historical Buddha. Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang comprises a Lan Na-style vihara in the east, a Sri Lankan style bell-shaped stupa containing the relics of the Lord Buddha to the west, and an ordination hall to the north, as well as several subsidiary buildings such as a bell tower. The stupa stands on a 3-tiered square base. The lower base has a small chedi at each of the four corners. The third tier of the base has a niche on each of the four sides assumed to have been restored afterwards. The interior of the vihara contains rare but heavily damaged fragments of mural paintings that probably date to the late 19th or early 20th centuries. [Source: TAT]
