The District of Columbia, or Washington, D.C. [ˈwɔʃɪŋtn̩], is a federal district, the seat of government, and has been the capital of the United States since 1800. The district is not a state and does not belong to any; it is instead directly under the jurisdiction of the United States Congress. Despite the name similarity with the state of Washington, Washington, D.C. is usually referred to simply as "Washington" in German-speaking regions. D.C. stands for District of Columbia.
During the 2010 census, Washington, D.C. had a population of 601,723. The United States Census Bureau estimated the population as of July 1, 2015, to be 672,228, marking the first significant increase after a steady decline in population since 1950. The Washington metropolitan area had a population of 5,582,170. Together with the neighboring Baltimore metropolitan area, the region had a total population of 8,572,971 according to the census.
