Did you know that in the 1920s, Robert Moses, a New York urban planner, introduced specific designs along the road to Jones Beach to "preserve it for the white and wealthy Americans". He assumed correctly that his "preferred clientele" would travel to the beach in their privat cars, while people from poor black neighbourhoods would get their by bus. So, he added delibertely hundreds of lowlying bridges along the highway: too low for the 12-foot busses to pass under.
