Did you know that in the Mponeng Gold Mine, 3 km below the surface, colonies of exotic bacteria nestle in the microscope pores of the gold-bearing rocks! These colonies are completely isolated from the rest of the Earth's biosphere. But how can they live there? Nuclear radiation emanating from the rocks provides them with enough energy by splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen. The bacteria are called Candidatus Desulforudis audaxviator.
