Refuge Ede

The refuge, which existed between 1915 and 1918, is a consequence of the First World War. After the Germans invaded Belgium on August 4, 1914, thousands of Belgians fled to the Netherlands, within a few months a million people crossed the Dutch border.
The government did not talk about refugee camps, because refuge sounds a lot friendlier. On paper, the refuge was calculated for about ten thousand inhabitants, but at its peak there were 5300 Belgians, who lived in wooden houses. This is how a village arose on the Ginkel Heath with, among other things, a church, post office, schools and a hospital.
G van Bruggen has written a booklet about it "The heath is big enough""
