Tijdens het leven van Rembrandt, in het begin van de 17de eeuw, verviervoudigde Amsterdam zijn inwonersaantal. Het groeide van een klein stadje van 60.000 naar een stad van meer dan 200.000 personen op 50 jaar tijd. Dit creëerde een enorme vraag naar huisvesting. Daarom werd de beroemde 17de eeuwse grachtengordel aangelegd om bouwgebieden te draineren. De niet zo kapitaalskrachtige immigranten werden gehuisvest in het noordwestelijke gedeelte dat later bekend werd als de Jordaan, en in het oosten de "Nieuwmarktbuurt".
