Explorer Bartolomeu Dias passed here on the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 as first European. He called it Cape of Storms as a tribute to the harsh weather that has carried his ships around it. It was the king of Portugal where Dias worked for, that changed the name in something more uplifting: Cape of Good Hope.
There is a very common misconception that the Cape of Good Hope is the southern tip of Africa, but in fact the southernmost point is Cape Agulhas, about 150 kilometres (90 mi) to the southeast.
