Here you can see a picture of the Aral Sea in August, 2000 vs August, 2014. Almost the complete lake is changed into a salt plain. At the end of May 2018, a severe sandstorm blew salt from these plains to the neighbouring countries. Wheat and cotton fields in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan were covered with a centimeter of salt resulting in complete crop failure. The battle of water, of which the ex-Aral lake is a result, is one of the severest problems in this part of the world.
