There are two chapels in the hamlet of El Socorro. The largest , located in the Plaza del Socorro, built at the end of the 16th century and this small chapel at the end of the Cuesta del Socorro from the early 20th century .
The large chapel has been declared a cultural heritage site, partly because of its importance for the annual pilgrimage in which thousands of pilgrims participate every year. This is considered the oldest pilgrimage in the entire Canary Archipelago, and also one of the most popular.
The original chapel is said to have been built in the first third of the 16th century near where the Virgin appeared on Chimisay beach. After a period of decline, the chapel was rebuilt in a different location at the end of the 16th century. This small chapel was built around 1915 on the spot where the original probably stood.
