Casa Montañés - La Laguna

Source: Willem Vandenameele

This house was built in 1746 by the sergeant major of the cavalry Francisco Montañés, who had inherited the inheritance of his house, as can be seen from the coat of arms above the lintel of the door .

It has three floors with a mezzanine and a beautiful square courtyard in which the woodwork stands out, especially the drains with zoomorphic motifs. During restoration work in the 1980s , interesting frescoes with neo-Arab and Pompeian decorations appeared on the walls of the upper floor, as well as a representation of the Virgin of Candelaria, attributed to Cristóbal Hdez. the Quintana.

The building was first used as a warehouse and housed the servants' quarters, the second floor was the residence of the masters of the house and the third was used as a warehouse to avoid the use of the common floor. The large size of the entrance door is due to the needs of the time and the goods that were continuously unloaded into the building. Out of respect for the cart workers who transported them, public stone urinals are located next to the entrance.

It is today the headquarters of the Consejo Consultivo del Gobierno de Canarias (Advisory Council of the Government of the Canary Islands).
