Plaza de la Concepcion - La Laguna

Description

According to José Rodríguez Moure, this is the oldest square in La Laguna.

The Plaza de la Concepción was the first square to be constructed in La Laguna, and possibly also in Tenerife , and is one of the city's most important urban spaces. The original configuration changed with the work on the church, which was promoted in 1511 by Alonso Fernández de Lugo, and acquired an irregular shape and a trapezoidal appendage. The layout was triangular, a sign of Mudejar design . A fountain was placed for public use, on a slope in the ground, making it known as the “low basin”. In the 21st century, a fountain was again placed on the square, reminiscent of the original fountain.

Around 1511 it became known as Plaza de Santa María la Mayor and in 1515 as Plaza de La Concepción, after the construction of the Church of Los Remedios (Cathedral). This square was originally intended as the main square of the city and was the setting for the celebration of important events. Since this was the original core of the city , according to tradition, the homes of the first Adelantado and other leading figures in the political and social life of that time were located here.

In 1600 this square was already named “Plaza de la Concepción”. This is recorded in the minutes of royal proclamations drawn up by the scribes of the Cabildo.

This square was one of three in the city where royal proclamations were made upon the enthronement of a monarch. Processions such as the Corpus Christi procession, bullfights on the feast of Saint James, etc. took place here. According to historical tradition, the children and grandchildren of the first Adelantado were buried here, in the small cemetery next to the church's atrium .

In the 21st century, as part of the development of the Special Plan for the Protection of the Historic Center of La Laguna, the square underwent an intervention that gave it its current appearance
